What Do I Feel?
"What
Do I Feel" is a children's game for ages 4 and up and 2-4 players. The
game is supposed to help talk about feelings in a way the facilitates
expression of emotions, encouraging dialogue and cooperation, and
develop the ability to pay attention to the feelings of others. The
cards consist of several emotions: disappointment, surprise, relaxation,
anger, happiness, love, offended, sadness, love, and fear. There are
four cards per emotion and the goal of the game is to get all four cards
to complete the set. You do this in a manner much like "go fish" the
players are dealt cards and you ask the other players if they have a
card you need. You do this by describing the situation or feeling of the
card like " do you have a card where a little boy is feeling scared
going to bed", "if you see a monster under your bed you feel", "how I
feel at night sometimes" if they do they give you the card if you don't
you draw and then the play continues. When you collect all four cards
you lay them down and you continue to collect sets until all are
completed.
What
is great about the game is that it goes deeper than just asking if you
have a number or color. Children can make up stories about the cards,
describe how they would feel if what they were doing the activity on the
card. This helps children with vocabulary, expressive language, and
communication. I have a child who is speech delayed so any opportunity
to help him communicate more is very helpful. These cards are perfect
for this very reason. They have simple but colorful pictures that are
easy to understand the situation depicted. I can help him articulate
words as he tells me his story or idea.
I
think this is a really great game to check out and add to a weekly game
night. The game is clear and easy to follow. Its very engaging for all
the players and mentally stimulating. The children can help each other,
be creative, and develop their communication skills. My children have
enjoyed playing the game and coming up with new stories for the cards
and trying to describe situations where they have felt the same way. I
try to encourage them to use their own real life situations to help
describe the feelings associated with the cards.
